Welcome

DanceVote 2010 is the national advocacy campaign to put dance on the agenda of MPs. If you love dance – have danced, dance now, want to dance or love watching dance – this is the campaign for you to join.

In the run up to the recent general election which took place on 6 May 2010, the dance sector came together to look for assurances from the main political parties that they will support the thriving dance sector.

The result was over 1,300 people sent DanceVote emails to their local political candidates standing for election to parliament. This resulted in responses from over 260 different candidates, representing all the main political parties. Of those, over 80 candidates who made pledges to support dance went on to be elected to the position of MP. To read all the DanceVote pledges made by the political candidates click here.

It is fantastic that so many MPs have pledged to support dance as a result of the DanceVote 2010 campaign. We now need to build on these initial positive responses. We need your help to connect the new MPs with local dance activities in their constituencies to give each MP the information he or she needs to champion dance in government.

Whether it's ballroom or ballet, morris or contemporary dance that gets your adrenalin pumping, GETTING INVOLVED IS EASY. DanceVote 2010 five original aims:
  • To connect every politician standing for election to parliament with a dance activity in their local area
  • To highlight the popularity of dance among constituents and the benefits to residents
  • To underline the need for sustained public funding in order to build on (and not undermine) the progress achieved over the past few years
  • To champion the value of dance as an art form, as well as in health and education
  • To secure a statement on how candidates will support dance and the arts if they are elected

DanceVote 2010 champions all dance, both professional and participatory. It is coordinated by Dance UK, working in partnership with a steering committee of leading dance professionals representing diverse backgrounds.
